Odonata

About

Hi, I'm Kale. I'm a fish in real life. You can read (very) marginally more useful information on my main website about page.

If you want more detailed information about my fan preferences and behaviors specifically, here you go:

Flavor profile

Stories

I like character-driven stories. I'm open to most genres as long as the characters and their interactions with each other are sufficiently interesting to me. That being said, I need conflict and character development (for better or worse) in some way, so I don't care for fluffy slice-of-life stuff with no friction.

I love weird horror, specifically the slow dread- or disgust-inducing stuff rather than pure slasher gore. I also like anything with a cool critter or monster in it. I enjoy wacky road trip (or road trip-adjacent) stories where the characters' antics are the primary plot device. Any story that combines multiple of these elements is almost guaranteed to be a home run.

I don't like stories that take themselves too seriously or introduce unnecessary convoluted plot threads to make the plot "more interesting." I can work with complex stories if they're executed thoughtfully.

Games

I'm shit at games, so I usually only judge games by their story because I can just watch other people play them and absorb everything through cutscenes. This is the only reason that I'm familar with Halo and Resident Evil.

Games I actually can play include simple RPGs for children like Pokemon, button-masher games like Bayonetta and Hades, and most puzzle/logic games. Games that require a lot of real-time strategizing are not for me because I'm no good at improv.

I might suck at games, but I'm largely a "cozy" or "wholesome" game hater, especially games that are marketed as such. The plot is usually fluff-oriented, and the gameplay is just as boring. I'd like to see more easy games/difficulty settings for "conventional" games so I can engage in cartoon violence without failing miserably!!!

Characters

I really like characters who look like they have it together but are really cringe fail in one way or another. I don't like characters where cringe fail/pathetic is most of their personality, though — the contrast is what makes it fun.

Glasses will almost always make me like a character design 80% more than I would have otherwise. The rest of the design is more negotiable. I'm also drawn to gender nonconformity, which is often code for "male characters that can be mistaken for lesbians."

Relationships

I'm not much of a shipper and get annoyed at people who only engage with media for shipping and/or warp characters for their ships so much that they may as well be OCs (part of why I stopped doing much in online fan spaces to begin with). If you're normal about it, we'll be fine!

I love introvert-extrovert relationships of any kind because of the potential for ridiculous personality conflicts. Any configuration where the people involved have very little in common is good, but usually that ends up being introvert-extrovert anyway.

I also like adoptive family relationships, especially when at least one participant isn't jazzed at all about the arrangement initially. See: Bayonetta and The Last of Us for good examples of this.

Favorite characters

Gnosis (Arknights)
Terrible pathetic wet bird of a man. I enjoy that every new piece of story with him in it just adds to how weird he is.

Bayonetta
A well-written sexywoman and she never takes her glasses off!

Ritsuko (Idolmaster)
I have a soft spot for her even though I don't really engage with Idolmaster much anymore!

Sakyo (A3)
I, too, hate spending money and think wearing 25 layers of clothes will help increase my size to deter predators.

Lisa (Bleach)
Had a total of about 5 seconds of screentime, but that was more than enough time for her to establish her lesbian swag.

Roark (Pokemon)
Valuable representation for bespectacled jocks such as myself.

About Odonata

Odonata is an order of insects consisting of the dragonflies and damselflies. Insects in Odonata have muscles attached directly to each of their wings, which allows them to control all 4 wings independently. Their coordination and excellent vision make them extremely efficient hunters that usually catch prey in midair. This has nothing to do with the website. I just think they're cool.

This layout is Odonata v2, featuring Ritsuko Akizuki from the Idolmaster series. Idolmaster has been doing a poor job at retaining me as a fan, but I still like Ritsuko and this art I did 5 years ago, so now we have this. This is probably the first and last time my art will ever make an appearance on a layout! Enjoy it!
